We Come From Mermaids: African Diaspora and Water (3 Part Series)

with Chandrika Francis

$5

Please note the classroom workshops (Part 1 & 2) centers the Black experience but welcomes folks of all identities.

The water workshop (Part 3) is a Black affinity space.

This three part series is an invitation to immerse yourself in the rich history of the African Diaspora and water!  Learn more about the ways our ancestors engaged with water for resistance and joy during slavery times and the middle passage, and the multitude of rich aquatic traditions in Atlantic African cultures pre European contact.  Through games, conversation, readings, lecture, and meditation, we will tap into the joy, liberation, resistance, and wisdom that connects us to our ancestors.  We encourage you to take as many parts as you are able, but it is not required to come to all three.  Please register for each segment you are attending!

Thanks to the generous support of Seattle Parks & Rec, this $40 workshop is $5.  If the cost is a barrier, please use promo code "SPR" to waive the fee. Geared towards ages 16+, but please reach out if you have a younger person you'd like to register.

Part 2: On Sun, May 12th, we will be in a classroom and learn about the story of the African diaspora and swimming during and after the transatlantic slave (Black folks and allies welcome)

Part 3: On Sunday, June 2nd, we will start in the classroom, and move to the warm water, shallow pool.  Through games, water meditation, songs, and other aquatic activities we will tap into the joy, liberation, resistance, and wisdom that connects us to our ancestors.  This space is geared towards beginner to advanced swimmers (to fully participate you can comfortably move around independently in 4ft deep water, and submerge your body in water at least up to your neck.  If you have fear around entering water, you are still completely welcome to join, and engage to the level of your comfort!
