Swim Foundations: Womxn of Color (2 week course)

Who is this class for: complete beginner to intermediate womxn of color & non-binary POC. 

Maximum number of Students: 5

Pool Description: Indoor Full size pool. 

This foundational swim course will run once weekly for two weeks.This is a journey towards empowered, liberated, and skilled swimming for womxn of color.  We will build skills around breathing, understanding your body in relationship with water, floating, body alignment, and stroke development.  Through mindfulness, meditation, and self inquiry activities, we center healing and deepening your relationship with water. No previous swim skills necessary. This class is geared towards adults of color with fear of water, but also welcomes those who already love being in water, and want to develop their skills in a safer space.

Thanks to the generous support of the New Settlement Community Center and Outdoor Afro this $120 workshop is offered for $20. However, we ask that you only register if you are can commit to attending both classes.

*COVD-19 Precautions: Class size limited to 5 students, instructor is vaccinated, students are asked to either be vaccinated or take a covid test within 24 hours of class.

Swim Foundations: BIPOC Drop In (all genders)

Who is this class for: complete beginner to intermediate people of color (all genders). 

Maximum number of Students: 5

Pool Description: Indoor Full size pool. 

This foundational swim class is offered as a one time drop-in, but you are welcome to register for both! This is a journey towards empowered, liberated, and skilled swimming.  We will build skills around breathing, understanding your body in relationship with water, floating, and body alignment.  Through mindfulness, meditation, and self inquiry activities, we center healing and deepening your relationship with water. We Come From Mermaids: African Diaspora and Water (Classroom Workshop)

Who this class is for: This workshop centers the Black experience but welcomes folks of all identities & genders

This classroom based workshop is an invitation to immerse yourself in the rich history of the African Diaspora and water!  Learn more about the ways our ancestors engaged with water for resistance and joy during slavery times and the middle passage, and the multitude of rich aquatic traditions in Atlantic African cultures pre European contact.  Through games, conversation, readings, lecture, and meditation, we will tap into the joy, liberation, resistance, and wisdom that connects us to our ancestors.  Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the New Settlement Community Center, this $50 workshop is only $10!

**COVD-19 Precautions: Workshop limited to 15 students, instructor is vaccinated, students are asked to be vaccinated or wear a mask (or both!)** 

**This class takes place on dry land, no need to bring swim gear!**

No previous swim skills necessary. This class is geared towards adults of color with fear of water, but also welcomes those who already love being in water, and want to develop their skills in a safer space.

QTPOC Aquatic Rest & Play

Saturday, December 2nd, 1-4pm

Who this class is for: complete beginner to intermediate Queer/Trans people of color. 

Maximum number of Students: 15

Pool Description: Heated Indoor Full size pool. Pool space accesible through stairs or elevator, with 4-5 steps with railing to enter water. 

This workshop is an invitation to soak in rest, play, and swim-skill building, in community with other Queer and Trans people of color.  We will build skills around breathing, understanding your body in relationship with water, floating, and body alignment.  Through mindfulness, meditation, and self inquiry activities, we center healing and deepening your relationship with water. Holding curiosity and joy at the center, we'll explore water and belonging through games. No previous swim skills necessary. This workshop welcomes adults with fear of water as well as those who already love being in water!

Thanks to the generous support of the New Settlement Community Center, this $50 workshop is only $10!

Open Swim: BIPOC Drop In (all genders)

Who is this class for: complete beginner to advanced people of color. This space centers women/femmes and lovingly welcomes all genders. 

Maximum number of Students: 15

Pool Description: Indoor Full size pool. 

This new offering is a space for Womxn of Color and nonbinary POC beginner swimmers to practice your skills and improve your water comfort, and for advanced swimmers to have a safer space to swim in community!  Come enjoy the heated pool, music, and the magic of playing in water with other folks of color. Former OSS students as well as new community memebers are welcome so bring a friend and come practice your breath work, strokes, or just vibe and float!

Who is this workshop is for: Black folks of all genders and swim levels

Maximum number of Students: 15

Pool Description: Heated Indoor Full size pool. Pool space accesible through stairs or elevator, with 4-5 steps with railing to enter water. 

Bring what you learned from Part 1 of We Come From Mermaids to the water! This is an embodied journey into African diasporic aquatic traditions!  Gain swim skills while learning more about the ways our ancestors engaged with water for resistance and joy during slavery times and the middle passage, and the multitude of rich aquatic traditions in Atlantic African cultures pre European contact.  Through games, water meditation, songs, and other aquatic activities we will tap into the joy, liberation, resistance, and wisdom that connects us to our ancestors.  This space is geared towards beginner to advanced swimmers (to fully participate you can comfortably move around independently in 4ft deep water, and submerge your body in water at least up to your neck.  If you have fear around entering water, you are still completely welcome to join, and engage to the level of your comfort!)

Swimming with "Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons From Marine Mammals"

Who this class is for: This class centers Black women & femmes and welcomes BIPOC folks of all gender identities. 

Maximum number of Students: 15

Pool Description: Heated Indoor Full size pool. Pool space accesible through stairs or elevator, with 4-5 steps with railing to enter water. 

This workshop in an opportunity to explore Undrowned, a “book-length meditation for the entire human species, based on the subversive and transformative lessons of marine mammals. Alexis Pauline Gumbs has spent hundreds of hours watching our aquatic cousins…Employing a brilliant mix of poetic sensibility, naturalist observation, and Black feminist insights, she translates their submerged wisdom to reveal what they might teach us.”

Through moving meditation, delving into her text, games and activities, this workshop is an embodied community based opportunity to explore the wisdom she gained from our marine cousins.
